Ukrainian troops have reportedly intercepted and destroyed a Russian Orlan-30 reconnaissance drone using a low-cost FPV drone, according to footage shared on Telegram by Ukrainian media channel CAPELINKO_UKRAINE FIGHTS. The interception was reportedly carried out by operators from the 195th Support and Security Base of Ukraine’s State Special Transport Service.

The Orlan-30 is among Russia’s more advanced battlefield drones, offering improved optics, targeting systems and extended range over previous models in the Orlan series. With the ability to fly up to 120 kilometers under remote control and up to 600 kilometers in autonomous mode, the UAV is designed for deep reconnaissance missions, often operating far behind Ukrainian frontlines.

A video of the strike, posted on Telegram with the insignia of the State Special Transport Service, shows the final moments of the engagement.

Russian forces frequently use drones like the Orlan-30 to identify targets and relay coordinates to artillery or missile units, allowing for rapid and precise strikes. This integration of reconnaissance drones with long-range fires has become a central feature of Russia’s battlefield tactics, particularly in areas with active frontlines or contested logistics routes.

Despite the Orlan-30’s enhanced capabilities and an estimated price tag of up to $150,000, the drone was brought down by what appears to be a much cheaper Ukrainian FPV drone. The engagement is an example of Ukraine’s focus on asymmetrical tactics, leveraging low-cost, rapidly produced technologies to counter more expensive enemy systems.

FPV drones, often modified commercial quadcopters equipped with explosives, have proven effective in striking enemy armor, equipment and airborne targets throughout the engagement. Their affordability and adaptability make FPV’s a valuable counter-UAS tool for mitigating Russia’s more expensive drones.
