AeroVironment, Inc. recently participated in the Arcane Thunder 23 (AT23) operational exercise in Europe, showcasing the capabilities of its JUMP 20 Group 3 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) in supporting multi-domain operations. AT23 is a part of the U.S. Army’s Project Convergence – Europe initiative, aimed at assessing the advancements in the service’s modernization efforts. The exercise focuses on validating and testing the seamless integration of effects across various domains, including air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace.
In collaboration with CACI and with support from the U.S. Army’s 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force (2nd MDTF), AeroVironment demonstrated the JUMP 20 UAS equipped with multiple Electronic Warfare (EW) payloads during the exercise. The UAS delivered real-time data, enhancing communication between sensors and shooters. This technology enables warfighters to coordinate both lethal and non-lethal effects efficiently.
Shane Hastings, AeroVironment’s vice president of Medium UAS, emphasized the adaptability of the JUMP 20 platform to meet the evolving needs of modern warfighters. The company remains committed to integrating new technologies into the JUMP 20 platform for maximum advantage in maritime and land domains.
Held near Ustka, Poland, from August 28 to September 8, the exercise involved the JUMP 20 carrying multiple imaging and EW payloads. The UAS utilized an open system architecture capable of quick adaptation to accommodate radios operating in different frequency bands. Notable features included a seven-inch stabilized imaging system with continuous zoom for superior day and night surveillance and a high-performance wideband radio receiver enabling passive radio frequency (RF) aerial surveys and real-time geolocation of signals. AT23 represents an unprecedented multi-domain and multi-national exercise, reflecting a close partnership between the U.S. Army Futures Command and the U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The initiative combines experimental technologies and formations to inform further capability requirements for the Army of 2030 and beyond.
