Around a year ago, Russia initiated an unprovoked and indefensible invasion on Ukraine, their peaceful and democratic neighbor. Over the past year, the commitment of the United States, along with about 50 countries who have given assistance to Ukraine, has strengthened.

The Department of Defense (DoD) announces a new security assistance package to extend the United State’s continued support for “Ukraine’s brave defenders” and to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. The package, equaling around $2 billion, is provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) as a part of our commitment to long-term security for Ukraine.

The United States will be committing additional Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and counter-UAS and electronic warfare detection equipment (Biden Administration).  Critical ammunition stocks for artillery and precision fires capabilities will also be given. These will strengthen Ukraine’s ability to repel Russian aggression.

Capabilities in the security assistance package include:

  •   Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
  •   Additional 155mm artillery rounds;
  •   Munitions for laser-guided rocket systems;
  •   CyberLux K8 UAS;
  •   Switchblade 600 UAS;
  •   Altius-600 UAS;
  •   Jump 20 UAS;
  •   Counter-UAS and electronic warfare detection equipment;
  •   Mine clearing equipment;
  •   Secure communications support equipment;
  •   Funding for training, maintenance, and sustainment.

USAI is an authority under which the United States procures capabilities as opposed to delivering equipment from DoD stocks. This announcement serves as the beginning of a contracting process providing additional capabilities to Ukraine Armed Forces. The United States will continue their support along with other allies to ensure Ukraine has all capabilities to meet immediate battlefield needs.
