The English Premier League game between Southampton and Aston Villa was briefly interrupted after a drone was spotted in the airspace around St. Mary’ Stadium. This interruption occurred late in the first half of the game.
Michael Salisbury, referee, instructed all players to leave the field slightly before the halftime break while match officials waited near the tunnel.
The drone eventually left and play was able to resume.
One year ago in London, there was a similar incident when play was suspended for roughly 20 minutes in the first half of a league match. Brentford and Wolverhampton were playing as a drone was hovering over the field.
