Background

In March 2022, the UAS Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) Operations Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) issued its final report, presenting a comprehensive set of recommendations to facilitate the expansion of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations, including activities like linear infrastructure inspections and package delivery. Recognizing the substantial safety, societal, and economic benefits of BVLOS operations, the FAA has received multiple exemption petitions from various parties proposing different approaches to ensure safe BVLOS operations. These petitions will be instrumental in enabling the next phase of BVLOS operations. To engage public participation, the FAA will publish separate summaries of the petitions in the Federal Register and invite comments on each specific exemption request. The FAA seeks public input on how technological advancements, standards, and operational strategies can be employed to safely demonstrate BVLOS operations while minimizing any potential adverse impact on safety.
