DroneShield has begun the development of custom higher-performance multi-channel software-defined radios (“SDRs”) for use in the advanced capabilities of future generations of its products.

The development of custom high-performance multi-channel SDRs by DroneShield aims to address the challenge of reducing hardware size while meeting ultra-small Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) parameters. This initiative is crucial for tactical deployment in the field by end-users. The goal is to ensure that the devices have sufficient computing ability to run complex AI algorithms independently, without relying on cloud or other systems—a concept known as edge computing.

The project involves over 50% of DroneShield’s engineering team, focusing on various disciplines, including Radio Frequency, Electronic Engineering, Firmware, Embedded Software, Data Science, Data, Mechanical, System, and Quality Engineering.

“As the drone threat space continues to rapidly evolve, DroneShield continues with a significant investment into next-generation technologies, including moving into fully custom software-defined radios in-house,” said Angus Bean, DroneShield’s Chief Technology Officer.
