Ukrainian drones struck the Nizhny Novgorod oil refinery in Kstovo late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, igniting a massive fire at the critical facility in central Russia. The attack, occurring approximately 520 miles from the front line, is one of the deepest strikes Ukraine has launched into Russian territory since the start of the war.
Strategic targeting of Russian energy infrastructure
Ukraine’s General Staff described the resulting blaze as “powerful,” burning through the early morning hours.
“The results and extent of the damage are being clarified,” officials in Kyiv reported.
Meanwhile, Russian military bloggers voiced alarm over the apparent vulnerability of the country’s energy infrastructure, with one lamenting, “Yet another refinery in flames.”
The Kstovo refinery processes approximately 13 million barrels of oil annually, contributing around 5 percent of Russia’s total refining output. This latest strike follows a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, which analysts estimate may have already reduced Russian petroleum production by more than 10 percent this month alone.
Escalation in Ukraine’s long-range drone strikes
While Ukraine has been targeting Russian energy facilities for nearly two years, recent attacks mark a notable escalation. The Ukrainian defense industry has developed more than a dozen long-range strike drone models, capable of reaching deep into Russian territory. Some modified sport planes used as drones can carry hundreds of pounds of explosives up to 800 miles with pinpoint accuracy, while others have an operational range exceeding 1,000 miles.
The battle of “engagement economics”
The economic disparity between the cost of Ukraine’s drones and the financial damage inflicted on Russian infrastructure is an example of the battle of “engagement economics”. While reconstructing a damaged refinery could cost millions of dollars, a Ukrainian attack drone – such as the Aeroprakt A-22, commonly repurposed for strikes – sells for around $130,000.
Russia continues to face challenges in protecting its vital energy sector with the Ukrainians constantly refining their drone warfare capabilities. With each successful strike, Ukraine damages Russia’s ability to sustain a prolonged war.
