AeroVironment has taken significant steps to reinforce its position as a major defense technology provider, completing its acquisition of BlueHalo and simultaneously announcing the launch of Titan 4, the latest addition to its suite of radio frequency-based counter-UAS systems.
The acquisition, finalized on May 1, brings together AeroVironment’s existing unmanned and precision strike capabilities with BlueHalo’s assets in space, cyber and directed energy. The combined organization, now operating under the unified AV inc. brand, aims to deliver integrated, cross-domain defense solutions spanning air, land, sea, space and cyber.
“This is a pivotal step in our journey,” said Wahid Nawabi, who remains Chairman, President and CEO of the new AV. He emphasized that the merger enhances the company’s ability to deliver innovation and operational impact at scale. The integration gives AV a national footprint and over 3,750 employees, with operations in more than 40 U.S. states.
The company will operate under two business segments; Autonomous Systems, led by Trace Stevenson, and Space, Cyber and Directed Energy, led by former BlueHalo COO Trip Ferguson. The former covers AeroVironment’s uncrewed platforms, precision munitions, counter-UAS tools and robotics, while the latter includes BlueHalo’s contributions in space technologies and directed energy.
Just days after the merger announcement, AV introduced the Titan 4 system – a lighter, more compact and more powerful update to its radio frequency-based counter-UAS technology.
With 540 watts of transmit power across six RF bands, Titan 4 offers a 250 percent power increase over its predecessor while reducing size by 73 percent and weight by 17 percent. The system, which can be deployed in under five minutes, is designed to counter Group 1 and 2 drone threats in mobile, dismounted or fixed-site operations.
“Smaller, lighter and more powerful, Titan 4 is poised to better respond to both individual threats and drone swarms in the harshest environments,” said Stevenson, now President of AV’s Autonomous Systems segment. He described the system as adaptive and autonomous, using escalating countermeasures tailored to mission needs.
Titan 4 is part of a broader expansion of AV’s Titan family, which includes several configurations aimed at different operational requirements. These include:
- Titan-MS, a fixed-site, AI-powered multi-sensor system that fuses RF, radar and optical data to detect and defeat both drone and ground threats.
- Titan-EO/IR, which integrates RF with mid-wavelength infrared sensors for enhanced tracking and threat classification.
- Titan-SV LOB, providing long-range detection and 3D tracking of sUAS with compatibility for vehicle-mounted or stationary setups.
- Titan-SV MOSA/SOSA, an upcoming open-architecture version to support interoperability across platforms.
According to AV, over 1,000 Titan units have already been deployed by U.S. military branches and allied forces globally, as well as by federal agencies for domestic security applications. Titan has been a Program of Record for an undisclosed DoD customer since 2022.
