Last week at AUSA 2023, BAE Systems featured a prototype variation of the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV).

The AMPV Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (CUAS) prototype, based on the same reliable chassis as the existing vehicle variants within the family, incorporates enhancements known as the External Mission Equipment Package (ExMEP). These ExMEP upgrades exemplify the swift integration of future technologies and capabilities onto the platform.

The prototype showcases the innovative ExMEP interchangeable top plate, which not only strengthens the proven AMPV hull structure but also offers adaptability for the rapid integration of various mission equipment. This modular approach opens up possibilities for the development of new turreted variations within the AMPV family, including those designed for CUAS.

The CUAS prototype is equipped with the Moog Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP) turret, a common feature of the U.S. Army’s Mobile Short Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) system. The RIwP is a proven, adaptable, and scalable remote turret that provides air defense, anti-armor, and multi-mission capabilities through precision medium-caliber and indirect fires. The CUAS variant also includes mission-ready command and control systems that surpass what is currently available on the existing AMPV fleet.

The Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) represents the future of battlefield capabilities, offering modularity and adaptability. The ExMEP enhancement and CUAS capability showcased at AUSA are just the beginning of its potential. With a full-rate production contract awarded in August 2023, the AMPV promises substantial advancements in power, mobility, interoperability, and survivability, ensuring it will continue to support Soldiers in various missions for years to come.
