Countering Potential Threats Posed by Drones

Communication from the Commission to the Council and the European Parliament on countering potential threats posed by drones sets out the European Union’s policy on countering potential threats from non-cooperative unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones.

This policy is part of a comprehensive counter-drone package, which includes two handbooks offering practical guidance on key technical aspects:

Announced as a flagship action under the Commission’s “Drone Strategy 2.0 for a Smart and Sustainable Unmanned Aircraft Eco-System in Europe,” this package addresses several critical needs:

1. Comprehensive and Harmonized Policy Framework: The policy aims to create a unified approach to drone regulation across Europe, ensuring consistency and clarity in counter-drone measures.

2. Common Understanding of Procedures: It establishes standardized procedures to address and mitigate the evolving threats posed by drones effectively.

3. Consideration of Technological Developments: The policy considers the rapid advancements in drone technology, ensuring that countermeasures remain effective and up-to-date.

The EU aims to foster a safe and sustainable unmanned aircraft ecosystem through these efforts, enhancing security and public safety across member states.
