Australia-based DroneShield has announced new interoperability between its DroneSentry-C2 command-and-control software and optical sensing systems developed by UK firm OpenWorks Engineering, as companies continue to expand multi-sensor approaches to counter-drone operations.
The integration allows data from OpenWorks’ optical sensors to be incorporated into DroneShield’s broader platform, which combines inputs from radio frequency and other detection methods into a single operational interface.
Counter-drone systems increasingly rely on combining multiple sensing technologies to improve detection accuracy and reduce false positives, particularly in complex environments where drones can be difficult to identify.
Focus on sensor fusion and automation
At the center of the integration is DroneShield’s DroneSentry-C2 software, which acts as a command-and-control layer designed to process and prioritize inputs from different sensors. The system includes an AI-based visual recognition tool, DroneOptID, which uses optical data to help confirm and track drone threats after initial detection.
According to the company, the software can automatically direct cameras toward detected objects and maintain tracking with limited operator input, while also recording footage for later analysis.
“Operators need clarity, not complexity,” said Angus Bean, DroneShield’s chief product officer, adding that expanding sensor options allows users to tailor deployments while maintaining a unified operational picture.
A push for interoperable systems
The announcement seeks to deliver on demand in the counter-drone sector for open architecture platforms that allow integration of third-party technologies. Rather than relying on standalone systems, operators are increasingly seeking solutions that can combine multiple detection and mitigation tools within a single framework.
OpenWorks Engineering, which specializes in high-resolution optical sensing systems, said the collaboration would expand deployment opportunities for its technology within integrated airspace security environments.
