Echodyne chosen as radar supplier for ADF’s C-UAS initiative, Project Land 156

  • September 5, 2025
  • Jack Overell

US radar company Echodyne has been selected to provide radar systems for the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) Project Land 156. This initiative, led by the Australian government, aims to equip the ADF with continuous counter-drone capabilities in response to evolving technological threats.

The company will support Leidos Australia, the newly appointed systems integration team leader for the project. Leidos Australia was appointed as Project Land 156’s Systems Integration Partner at the end of August, gaining a contract valued at $45.9 million.

Other collaborators include EOS Australia, which already utilizes an Echodyne radar in its Slinger Remote Weapon Station, alongside Acacia Systems, L3Harris Technologies, and Department 13.

“We are pleased to be selected as part of the Leidos Australia team for the Australian Defence Force counter-UAS project, Land 156,” said Eben Frankenberg, CEO of Echodyne.

“As C-UAS solutions become ever more critical to mission success and dismounted soldier safety, Echodyne’s COTS architecture allows us to quickly respond to increasing global demand for our advanced MESA radar systems.”

Echodyne’s 4D metamaterials electronically scanned array (MESA) radars are designed to support counter-unmanned aerial systems operations. These radars enable optical sensors to maintain visual contact with targets and provide precise tracking for mitigation platforms. The company emphasizes that high-fidelity data is essential for detecting, tracking, targeting, and neutralizing drone threats.

Under Project Land 156, the Australian Army will also undertake an initial rapid demonstration of a minimum viable counter-drone capability by December 2025, which will include:

  • An Australian command and control capability – the Cortex Command and Control System, developed by Acacia Systems

  • An Australian effector system, delivered by EOS Defence Systems

  • An Australian sensor system, delivered by Department 13

  • Additional sensor and effector systems

  • Services, including systems integration and capability assurance
