UAE-based defense technology company EDGE Group has introduced an advanced mobile counter-drone solution. The system integrates the Ajban 442A armored vehicle with radar, detection technologies and the ADASI Shadow 3 counter-drone system, according to Army Recognition. Designed to provide military forces with real-time drone defense capabilities, the platform aims to ensure protection from aerial threats on the battlefield and in secured zones.
The Ajban 442A, developed by UAE’s NIMR company, is a 4×4 tactical armored vehicle utilised for diverse military applications. It operates effectively across a range of terrains, from urban environments to rugged, off-road landscapes.
In its latest counter-drone configuration, the Ajban 442A is equipped with an advanced radar and detection system mounted on its roof. These systems enable the vehicle to identify and track hostile drones over significant distances, providing a proactive defense mechanism against drone threats.
A dual-purpose counter-drone system
A key component of the system is the ADASI Shadow 3, a portable vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone designed for both countermeasure and strike missions. The Ajban 442A features three rear-mounted containers, each capable of housing and launching the Shadow 3. This allows for rapid drone deployment, even while the vehicle remains in motion, enabling real-time response to incoming aerial threats or surveillance requirements.
The Shadow 3 is engineered for resilience in contested environments, boasting GPS anti-jamming capabilities to withstand electronic warfare disruptions. It has an operational range of more than 30 kilometers and an endurance of up to 20 minutes. Depending on mission requirements, it can be powered by either an electric or turbine jet engine, enabling speeds between 200 km/h and 400 km/h.
Multi-role capabilities
In its countermeasure role, the Shadow 3 is designed to intercept and neutralize hostile drones mid-flight, preventing potential threats to personnel or critical infrastructure. Additionally, its electronic warfare capabilities allow it to jam or disrupt adversary drone communications.
Beyond counter-drone operations, the Shadow 3 is also capable of executing precision strikes. Its autonomous target acquisition and engagement system, coupled with computer vision navigation, enable strikes on high-value targets.
