Estonian defense startup Frankenburg Technologies has launched a new class of fast, solid-fueled interceptor missiles designed specifically to neutralize drones and loitering munitions. Unveiled as the Frankenburg Mark 1, the system represents a shift toward cost-effective and scalable solutions in the face of high-volume drone attacks, such as those seen in Ukraine.
According to the company, the Mark 1 is a conventional, low-cost interceptor missile built for mass production and optimized for speed and agility. It is powered by solid rocket fuel and guided by AI, enabling rapid response to aerial threats without relying on expensive strategic air defense systems.
Frankenburg emphasizes that its system is up to ten times more affordable than traditional air defense missiles, making it particularly attractive to smaller nations or those looking to bolster their tactical defenses against saturation drone attacks. The missile is aimed at intercepting drones like the Iranian-made Shahed series used extensively by Russian forces.
Departing from the typical defense procurement model, Frankenburg prioritizes affordability, mobility, and battlefield practicality, calling legacy systems “heavy, slow and expensive.” The system is fully developed in Europe, reflecting a growing trend toward regional defense innovation and self-reliance.
In addition to the missile itself, the company also introduced a turret-mounted launcher featuring two missile pods and an integrated guidance unit. The compact setup forms a mobile, self-contained counter-UAS solution suitable for frontline deployment.
With the rise of low-cost drone warfare, Frankenburg’s Mark 1 aims to deliver a system that can be fielded quickly, scaled efficiently and sustained economically in contested environments.
