European allies launch Electronic Warfare Coalition to support Ukraine

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting held on Friday April 11 saw the establishment of the Electronic Warfare Coalition consisting of 10 European allies including Ukraine itself.

The coalition will seek to provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the electronic warfare capabilities required to conduct continued operations against the continued aggression of invading Russian Forces.

In a post announcing the coalition, Ukraine’s Minister of Defence Rustem Umerov stated the following regarding the critical importance of enhancing these capabilities:

“Electronic warfare is a critically important component of modern warfare. Without effective EW capabilities, no unit can be fully combat-ready. The launch of this coalition will enable us to coordinate efforts and comprehensively respond to the needs of our Defense Forces.”

According to Umerov, the coalition’s work will focus specifically on the areas below:

• Procuring equipment
• Training and preparing specialists
• Developing policies and doctrines in the field of electronic warfare

The formal establishment of the coalition will enable a more cohesive effort to achieve these goals, leveraging Ukraine’s significant battlefield experience and understanding of operational requirements and the allies’ defence industrial bases.

This is now the ninth coalition established to support Ukraine in a specific area and will be expected to operate based on a similar model to enable the delivery of equipment to the front lines. For example, the Drone Capability Coalition, co-led by the UK and Latvia, recently delivered 30,000 drones to Ukraine acquired from Anduril UK.

Highlighting the importance of continued support, especially in light of uncertainty of continued US involvement in the war, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius noted:

“Our goal is and must remain the restoration of peace, freedom, and security on the European continent. It is absolutely clear to me that we need to continue to have a strong military Ukraine and that it needs our support. Only then can we clear the way for a peaceful resolution.”

With electronic warfare a key area defining operational capabilities on either side, it is to be hoped this new initiative delivers the capabilities Ukrainian warfighters need on the front lines.
