Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems- Future of Warfare is a work by Apratim Sharma.
Throughout the history of warfare, nations that have effectively and innovatively utilized technology have often emerged victorious. Military revolutions frequently stem from technological innovations, and the current global landscape is undergoing a profound and rapid transformation with the widespread deployment of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). These UAS play a pivotal role in various conflicts, including conventional ones like Nagorno–Karabakh (Azerbaijan–Armenia), the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, and the unconventional ‘Global War on Terror’ in Afghanistan. The collaborative and innovative use of UAS has become a defining factor in modern conflicts. As a result, it is crucial for contemporary military forces to possess effective counter-UAS capabilities, as these capabilities are expected to redefine the future of warfare.
This paper explores the prospective roles of UAS, scrutinizes their tactical, operational, and strategic impact, evaluates their vulnerabilities, and, having identified the necessity for counter-UAS (C-UAS) capabilities in future wars, proposes a C-UAS philosophy, methodology, kill chain, and a plausible approach tailored to the context of India.
