HSU and ipoque partner to develop 5G-based C-UAS technology

The Helmut-Schmidt-University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H) has formed a research collaboration with ipoque, a Rohde & Schwarz company, to explore methods for detecting and mitigating unauthorized drone activity using 5G network data analysis.

The project will leverage HSU/UniBw H’s 5G Campus Network, established by Deutsche Telekom Global Business and Ericsson as part of the Digital Sensor-2-Cloud Campus Platform initiative. Researchers will focus on detecting anomalies in 5G campus networks to identify and track unauthorized drones, with potential applications for securing critical infrastructure such as airports and stadiums.

HSU/UniBw H has been involved in drone security research, including the development of the FALKE interceptor drone. The collaboration with ipoque will integrate network analysis capabilities into their research, utilizing ipoque’s expertise in network optimization and security.

“This collaboration represents a crucial step towards harnessing the power of 5G network analysis for national security,” stated Prof. Gerd Scholl, leading the project at HSU/UniBw H. “By developing sophisticated anomaly detection capabilities, we can significantly enhance the protection of sensitive areas against unauthorized drone activities.”

Martin Mieth, Director Network Analysis for ipoque. “This synergy is pivotal for overcoming current data protection challenges and paving the way for the next generation of AI-driven network security solutions.”

As concerns grow over the potential misuse of drones in restricted airspace, the seeks to utilise growing 5G networks as a tool for detecting and countering aerial threats in real time.
