According to the Dominican Today, a recent incident involving an airspace intrusion by a drone resulted in diverting an Iberia flight, originally en route to Puerto Rico, to the Dominican Republic. The drone’s presence over Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the primary airport, impacted this flight and caused delays and rerouting for several other flights in the Caribbean region.
Jorge Hernández, the President of Aerostar and the airport manager, confirmed that air operations were temporarily halted last week following federal orders. This precaution was taken after the control tower detected a drone in the airport’s airspace.
The situation prompted the activation of Aerostar’s security and emergency response protocols, with all relevant federal and state agencies promptly informed. Hernández emphasized the significance of adhering to federal regulations, highlighting that operating a drone over the airport without Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval is prohibited and subject to federal penalties.
