Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) earlier this week, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan of the Indian Army emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive C-UAS strategy for the Armed Forces.
Delivering the keynote address at the “UAS Warfare with Special Focus on Counter-UAS” seminar in New Delhi, General Chauhan highlighted the transformative role of UAS in modern warfare, pointing out key trends such as speed, advancements in robotics, and AI-driven intelligence that enhance UAS capabilities – making them significantly more disruptive.
Referencing current ongoing conflicts, the CDS noted how drones are changing the economics of warfare with their low-cost, high-impact potential. He stressed the need for the Indian Armed Forces to establish a common terminology for UAS, drones, and uncrewed systems.
Emphasizing clear doctrinal classification, the General described four generations of UAS and the necessity for comprehensive C-UAS systems. Additionally, he called for collaboration among users, designers, and manufacturers to ensure a self-reliant defense future for India – a key focus of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
Discussions also addressed the growing drone threats along India’s northern and western borders, as well as in the Indian Ocean Region, underlining the need for advanced detection and neutralization systems.
The event brought together experts from the Indian Armed Forces, strategic policymakers, industry leaders, and domain specialists. Government stakeholders in attendance included the Indian Armed Forces, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Coast Guard, and the police.
Representatives from indigenous industry companies including JSW UAV Ltd, Mahindra Defence, Adani Defence Systems, Kepler Aerospace, and Shyam VNL Pvt Ltd, showcased solutions for counter-UAS warfare.
