Lockheed Martin recently conducted a field demonstration showcasing a new modular, layered defense system aimed at countering sUAS. The demonstration is the first in a planned series designed to highlight the system’s ability to detect, track, identify and defeat UAS threats.
The system features an open-architecture design that integrates command and control (C2) capabilities with AI-enabled detection software, low-cost sensors and a variety of effectors. According to Lockheed Martin, this approach allows for rapid deployment and seamless integration with other systems.
Tyler Griffin, Director of Counter-UAS at Lockheed Martin, emphasized the role of open architecture in providing an adaptable defense solution:
“Integrating diverse sensors through a user-optimized command and control system helps simplify threat identification, and we have the complementary technology offerings to convert collected data into actionable information,” he said.
Key elements of the system include a modular design allowing the integration of various sensors and effectors, AI-driven software to enhance detection and tracking capabilities and a scalable framework to facilitate collaboration with industry partners. During the demonstration, Lockheed Martin and its partners, including Fortem Technologies, showcased the system’s ability to detect, track and mitigate threats from both individual drones and swarms.
Effective defense against drone swarms requires systems that can process large amounts of data in real time, communicate with C2 systems, and manage multiple engagements simultaneously. As the threat landscape evolves, there will likely be an increasing demand for solutions that can respond to emerging challenges in real time.
