MatrixSpace has announced the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) authorization for MatrixSpace Radar. Rigorously tested to adhere to the FCC’s emissions and frequency specifications, MatrixSpace Radar is now available to commercial and public organizations across the United States.
MatrixSpace offers radio navigation services in the air and on the ground. MatrixSpace Radar, characterized by its minimal SWaP-C (size, weight, power, and cost), delivers robust situational awareness for airborne and ground-based objects, irrespective of lighting and weather conditions. This advancement significantly facilitates Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights for unmanned and autonomous aircraft while concurrently enhancing safety measures for general aviation.
Dan Nobbe, Vice President of RF and Radar Systems at MatrixSpace, emphasized the significant applications of their advanced radar solution in the rapidly growing autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicle sector. The FCC authorization marks a crucial milestone, enabling MatrixSpace to actively engage with commercial, defense, and public safety markets. This approval allows them to meet the increasing demand for advanced capabilities in digitizing outdoor environments.
Jack We, co-founder and CEO of Nightingale Security, highlighted the alignment of MatrixSpace Radar with Nightingale Security’s focus on DroneFlightRules (DFR), physical security, and rapid all-weather response. The DroneAwareness and Avoidance (DAA) sensor enhances safety during night and adverse weather conditions, which is crucial for on-call emergency readiness.
Greg Waters, founder and CEO of MatrixSpace, expressed pride in the FCC’s authorization to commence shipments of their innovative radar sensors. He applauds the MatrixSpace team for achieving this milestone quickly, noting the company’s progress from a standing start two years ago to the release of this unique product. Waters looks forward to entering production, with more developments expected in 2024.

Our groundbreaking technology integrates top-tier sensing capabilities, AI edge processing, and real-time RF communication, reshaping business models across various vertical markets. This innovation holds particular significance for industries like defense and public safety. At the core of our open architecture sensing platform is the MatrixSpace Radar, a foundational product that sets the standard for advanced object detection and tracking capabilities.
MatrixSpace Radar boasts the lowest cost, size, weight, and power (SWAP) of any comparable radar today. Key features of the MatrixSpace Radar are:
- Portable – Small form factor (5.6” x 3.4” x 1.5”) allows you to place units in any location and carry them to new locations as needed. Easily attach to autonomous vehicles or fixed locations like water towers, buildings, dams, and poles for a full 360-degree view of any area.
- Detect and monitor relevant movement in any environment – humans, airborne objects, ground vehicles – even in visually challenging conditions, including rain, fog, and smoke.
- Fast to deploy – Install and configure the device in minutes. No specialized training is required.
- Ultra-low power supply – The radar’s low energy consumption means it can be powered by solar or battery for remote, long-term usage. No standard electricity connection is needed.
- Open and extensible – MatrixSpace Radar is based on an open architecture that integrates with industry-wide UTM, Command and Control, counter UAS, and traffic and video surveillance systems for a comprehensive, unified view.
- 4D imaging radar – MatrixSpace Radar is the most advanced radar technology designed to detect and visualize objects while capturing key aspects of telemetry, such as range, location, heading altitude, etc.
