Moscow’s four major airports temporarily suspended operations on Monday morning after Russian authorities reported a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack targeting the Russian capital.
Moscow’s Mayor claims 80 Ukrainian drones were intercepted around the city between approximately 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. local time. He said emergency services were responding to multiple drone crash sites but reported no casualties or immediate significant damage.
Russia’s civil aviation authorities temporarily suspended flights at Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports during the attack. Flight operations resumed later in the morning after restrictions were lifted.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces intercepted a total of 301 Ukrainian drones across the country and in occupied Crimea between Sunday night and Monday morning.
The latest attack comes days after Ukraine targeted a major oil refinery in Moscow that supplies a significant share of fuel to the capital and surrounding region, and is said to be a retaliation for the extensive bombing of Ukrainian cities.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported that a Russian drone strike targeted a cargo vessel traveling toward Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said one crew member was killed in the attack and that eight sailors, including citizens of Turkey and India, were forced to abandon the vessel using a life raft.
Kuleba said the vessel “sustained significant damage and lost seaworthiness.”
