The NATO Support and Procurement Agency is set to assist a coalition of Allies, which includes Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, in procuring a maximum of 1,000 Patriot missiles. This initiative aims to bolster their air defenses in response to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. The contract will contribute to the expansion of European missile production, improving supply chains and guaranteeing the replenishment of Allied stockpiles.
“I welcome Allies’ timely announcement to invest in up to 1,000 new Patriot air defence missiles to bolster the Alliance’s security”, said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. “This investment shows the strength of transatlantic defence cooperation and NATO’s commitment to keeping our people safe. Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians, cities and towns show how important modern air defences are. Scaling-up ammunition production is key for Ukraine’s security and for ours.”
The contract, valued at $5.5 billion, has been granted to COMLOG, a collaborative venture between the U.S. company Raytheon and the German company MBDA, situated in Schrobenhausen, Germany. This substantial order is poised to facilitate the establishment of a production facility for Patriot missiles within Germany. Patriot air defense systems are versatile tools capable of safeguarding against aircraft, helicopters, and missiles by intercepting them at considerable distances. In response to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, NATO has deployed Patriot missile batteries to safeguard its Allies on the eastern flank. Furthermore, NATO Allies have supplied Patriot systems to Ukraine and are dedicated to further enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities. (Press Release)
