Northrop Grumman Corporation and Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize their collaboration in supporting innovative layered air and missile defense capabilities for Germany. Northrop Grumman’s proficiency in Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) and control capabilities, exemplified by the U.S. Army’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), complements Diehl’s cutting-edge ground-based air and missile defense systems, including the IRIS-T SLM.
The MOU serves as a framework for collaboration, enabling the companies to leverage their expertise to explore advanced technologies that would facilitate the seamless integration of Germany’s air and missile defense systems. Additionally, it addresses the imperative for NATO and European allies to modernize their IAMD capabilities.
Northrop Grumman’s IAMD command and control capabilities offer warfighters scalability and flexibility to address the requirements of their distinct missions. The IBCS, designed for the U.S. Army, is a foundational component that integrates current and future assets across the battlespace, irrespective of origin, service, or domain. Leveraging its modular, open, and scalable architecture, IBCS equips warfighters with enhanced capabilities by consolidating sensor data to provide a unified, actionable picture of the entire battlespace. This empowers rapid and informed decision-making to optimize engagements.
The IRIS-T Surface-Launched Medium-Range (SLM) is a surface-to-air guided missile featuring an upgraded rocket motor for extended range. Developed for the German Tactical Air Defence, the IRIS-T SLM is launched from a multi-function container, offering 360-degree protection against aircraft, helicopters, drones, and missiles. It seamlessly integrates into existing and future air defense systems by connecting to fire control systems through standardized and software-based interfaces.
