Pierce Aerospace has been awarded a $10 million Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity subcontract from Amentum to advance its drone Remote Identification technologies under the oversight of the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate.
The subcontract, a Phase III Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award, calls for Pierce Aerospace to deploy and evaluate its Remote ID detection and tracking systems across multiple locations and agencies.
This award builds on Amentum’s Department of Defense Information Analysis Center contract, which aims to foster innovation in research and development. The collaboration provides an opportunity for Pierce Aerospace to scale its technologies, including the YR1 Remote ID Sensor, which is designed as an affordable solution for monitoring airspace and enhancing security through layered capabilities.
“This award marks a big step in the evolution of end users’ airspace missions,” said Aaron Pierce, CEO of Pierce Aerospace. “We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity to serve various United States agencies that are now using our Remote ID capabilities to enhance their airspace awareness.”
Remote ID, mandated by the FAA since March 2024, allows drones to broadcast identification and location data, a critical component of airspace management. Pierce Aerospace’s systems aim to fill gaps in airspace awareness, enabling government and commercial users to better monitor drone activity.
Pierce highlighted the significance of this Phase III subcontract as a positive development for the SBIR program:
“Using an SBIR Phase III vehicle to scale Remote ID is the exact sort of path that Congress envisioned for the SBA’s SBIR program,” he said.
