A controversial new prison being built in Leicestershire, UK, will feature “security by design” physical design measures to reduce the risk of contraband delivery by drone, reports the Leicester Mercury.

The non-opening windows will prevent the potential delivery of contraband directly to inmates’ cells via drones.  The windows will also reduce noise and eliminate the possibility for residents to dispose of contraband, making it easier for staff to detect banned items.

The details were revealed in new plans for the layout and design of the prison, being built on Welland Avenue, Gartree, Lubenham. These plans were approved at the Harborough District Council (HDC) planning committee meeting on Tuesday, June 11.

Drones are being used worldwide to deliver dangerous contraband, including tools, drugs, and cellular telephones, which are often used to facilitate criminal activity from within the walls of the prison. Although much of the focus is on drone detection and mitigation technology, prisons can use physical design measures to reduce the risk of successful contraband drone delivery, including features such as nets and hardened windows.
