QinetiQ has been selected to supply the US Army’s Threat Systems Management Office (TSMO) with a specialized variant of its Banshee Jet 80+ target drone system. Referred to as the MQM-185B, this target system offers the capability to simulate hyper-realistic threat scenarios, enabling the US Army to conduct training exercises that closely resemble real-world situations. The collaboration between QinetiQ and TSMO will enhance the Army’s training effectiveness by providing the ability to engage with highly realistic threat targets during their flight operations.
Through the integration of QinetiQ’s cutting-edge technology and the advanced requirements of the TSMO, the MQM-185B aerial target offers a capability specifically tailored for the US Army. This collaboration ensures that the Banshee target system is optimally compatible with the TSMO’s proprietary Army Ground Aerial Target Control System (AGATCS).
With a track record of operations in more than 40 countries and being utilized in exercises launched from the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier, the Banshee Jet 80+ has proven its versatility. This advanced aerial target system offers a valuable opportunity to conduct precise drills by accurately emulating cruise missiles and enemy fast jets, which are commonly encountered during missions. The MQM-185B, capable of reaching a maximum altitude of 30,000 feet, possesses the ability to execute low-level sea skimming and terrain following maneuvers, replicating realistic adversary behaviors for effective training.
Ryan Peterson, Customer Account Manager, QinetiQ Target Systems, said: “Using highly accurate targets such as the Banshee is becoming a necessity for our defence customers. As the threat environment increases in complexity, organisations such as TSMO are seeking technology capable of delivering complex training and evaluation exercises.”
“The MQM-185B, combined with QinetiQ’s engineering and operational flexibility, enables us to deliver a customised platform that satisfies TSMO requirements and makes its operations more agile and cost effective. We’re delighted to be supporting the US Army as it strengthens its training and Test and Evaluation capabilities.”
