Rafael demonstrates TYPHOON anti-drone system in desert test

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has released a video showcasing a successful test of its TYPHOON anti-drone weapon system, demonstrating its ability to intercept and neutralize aerial threats in a desert environment.

The video, published on Monday, shows the remote-controlled TYPHOON system engaging a drone approaching a protected area. Initially, the system’s first rounds missed their target, but a second burst successfully struck the drone, causing it to crash into the sand. This test offers confirmation of the system’s land-based capabilities, as previous demonstrations of the TYPHOON system focused primarily on naval applications.

The trial comes amid increased Israeli investment in drone defense technologies. On February 5, the Israeli Ministry of Defense announced funding for around a dozen new counter-drone systems in response to the growing use of UAS by Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran and the Houthis.

Among the systems highlighted was Rafael’s TYPHOON, described as a “30-mm projectile interception system for various threats, offering long-range capabilities and strategic asset protection.” Also included was the Mini-Typhoon, a medium-range remote-controlled system designed for aerial threat interception, alongside innovative drone-based countermeasures.

According to Rafael, the latest test demonstrated the TYPHOON 30-mm system’s adaptability by mounting it on a modular 20-foot surface platform, emphasizing its ability to be deployed rapidly in diverse operational environments.

Experts have noted that lower-cost interception systems like the TYPHOON could offer advantages over existing missile-based defenses such as the Iron Dome and Arrow systems, which rely on expensive interceptors. The ability to fire multiple lower-cost rounds increases the system’s effectiveness against swarms of small drones launched from close range.

The TYPHOON system integrates advanced situational awareness technologies, including state-of-the-art sensors, thermal imaging, day/night cameras and radar systems. The detection and tracking capabilities are enhanced by RADA’s MHR RPS-42 radar and CONTROP’s iSea-25 electro-optical payload, providing comprehensive threat detection and tracking.
