Rohde & Schwarz partners with TRUMPF on European-made laser C-UAS

Rohde & Schwarz and TRUMPF have announced a partnership to jointly develop a domestically produced counter-drone system that integrates radar sensing and high-energy laser technology to detect, track and neutralize unauthorized drones.

The collaboration, unveiled this week, combines Rohde & Schwarz’s experience in electronic systems and radar-based drone detection with TRUMPF’s expertise in industrial laser manufacturing. The companies say the system will provide a “sovereign solution” for defending critical infrastructure and sensitive sites against unmanned aerial threats.

The agreement reflects a growing European focus on developing indigenous counter-UAS capabilities amid the rising frequency of drone incursions over restricted areas. Unauthorized drones have disrupted airports, penetrated protected zones and raised security concerns across the continent in recent years.

Under the partnership, TRUMPF’s high-energy laser will be integrated into the broader Rohde & Schwarz counter-drone ecosystem, which includes detection, tracking and engagement components. The laser system is designed to provide a means of neutralizing drones once identified by radar and electronic sensors.

Alexander Orellano, Executive Vice President for Technology Systems at Rohde & Schwarz, said the partnership would contribute to Europe’s defense autonomy by providing a fully domestic capability. TRUMPF Executive Board Member Hagen Zimer added that the company’s laser and beam-shaping technologies, combined with Rohde & Schwarz’s sensor expertise, would enable an “effective and integrated” solution for airspace protection.

Both companies emphasized that the system will be manufactured within Europe, with the goal of strengthening regional resilience against the evolving threat of unmanned aerial systems.
