Radu Miruță, Romanian Minister of National Defense, met with Daniel P. Driscoll, Secretary of the United States Army, on April 27 in Bucharest, where the two sides signed a letter of intent to expand cooperation on drone and counter-drone technologies.
The agreement grants Romania access to the Counter-UAS Marketplace, a U.S.-developed digital platform designed to streamline the identification and acquisition of counter-drone systems. Romania becomes the second country after the United Kingdom to receive real-time access to the platform, which includes a catalog of more than 1,600 systems and components.
The Counter-UAS Marketplace is intended to accelerate defense procurement by reducing the timelines associated with traditional contracting processes. The platform allows users to identify systems tailored to operational requirements.
During the meeting, Miruță emphasized Romania’s continued commitment to defense investment and transatlantic cooperation.
“Romania remains a firm supporter of strengthening the transatlantic relationship. In a difficult economic context for Romania, we have increased the budget allocated to defense, in accordance with the commitments assumed at the allied level,” he said.
He also highlighted the role of U.S. forces and investment in Romania, adding that “Romania is a reliable partner that respects its commitments,” while referencing the long-standing strategic partnership between the two countries.
Focus on Eastern Flank security
The visit also included discussions with Romania’s Chief of the Defense Staff, Gheorghiță Vlad, who stressed the importance of cooperation with the United States in strengthening NATO’s Eastern Flank.
“Cooperation with the United States Army represents an essential pillar of regional security, and the dialogue with the Secretary of the Army, Daniel P. Driscoll, confirms the joint commitment to strengthening the defense posture on the Eastern Flank. The strategic partnership with the United States of America remains fundamental for rapid adaptation to new security challenges,” Vlad said.
Both sides reiterated their intention to develop further bilateral projects in military capabilities, training and joint exercises. Officials said these efforts are aimed at improving interoperability and response capacity between the two armed forces.
The discussions also touched on preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara, where both countries are expected to coordinate on shared defense priorities.
