Sentrycs unveils AI counter-UAS system to target DIY drones

Sentrycs has introduced HORIZON, an AI-driven counter-drone solution designed to detect DIY drones in real time in response to the increasing prevalence of such drones. DIY drones present a growing security concern, as these low-cost, easily assembled devices can evade traditional counter-drone detection systems. These drones often employ techniques such as frequency hopping and multi-frequency operation, making them difficult to track.

Addressing the detection gap

Traditional counter-drone measures rely on known drone signal libraries, which may not account for the wide range of transmission techniques employed by DIY drones, including frequency hopping and operating across multiple frequencies. Sentrycs’ HORIZON aims to bridge this detection gap by analyzing RF environments and identifying unique signal bursts emitted by drones, remote controls and other communication devices.

Unlike conventional detection systems, HORIZON does not require a pre-existing signal library. Instead, it utilizes advanced machine learning algorithms to extract insights from previously unknown communication patterns, making it the first protocol manipulation-based counter-UAS solution of its kind.

Enhancing threat response

By identifying signals that might otherwise go unnoticed, the HORIZON system provides an early warning mechanism for potential drone threats. This intelligence can support further countermeasures, such as electro-optic confirmation, jamming or other mitigation techniques. The system’s capabilities lay the foundation for a fully integrated Detection, Tracking, Identification and Mitigation (DTIM) platform.

Future expansion and AI integration

Sentrycs envisions HORIZON evolving into a comprehensive counter-drone system capable of autonomously learning and adapting to new drone transmission protocols. The company states that future iterations will expand beyond detection to actively mitigate threats in real time.

Ami Shalev, VP of Research at Sentrycs, highlighted the significance of this development:

“Sentrycs is advancing counter-drone technology to exceed current capabilities. These AI-driven capabilities ensure Sentrycs solutions evolve alongside the DIY drone landscape, adapting to threats with precision and efficiency. Building on the capabilities of the HORIZON, the engine is being developed into a fully self-learning DTIM platform. This next-generation solution will address all DIY drones, regardless of type or transmission technology, ensuring comprehensive protection and operational efficiency.”

As the threat of DIY drones continues to grow, technologies like HORIZON could play a key role in securing sensitive areas and critical infrastructure from unauthorized aerial incursions.
