SpearUAV, an Israeli provider of AI-based encapsulated weapon systems, has launched the VIPER I interceptor, a loitering counter-UAS interceptor designed to enhance top-attack protection for tactical forces, armoured vehicles and fixed installations. The VIPER I builds on the existing VIPER family of loitering munitions and is engineered to intercept airborne threats like hostile UAS, loitering munitions and other top attackers.
The interceptor is notable for its versatile deployment capability, being launchable directly from military vehicles using SpearUAV’s Multi Canister Launcher (MCL) without the need for vehicle modifications. This allows for rapid, in-motion response during dynamic battlefield scenarios, offering continuous aerial protection to manoeuvring forces.
With a low size, weight and power (SWaP) profile, VIPER I is engineered for deployment efficiency. The UAS integrates third-party payloads for detection and neutralisation of threats. Its AI system is designed to enable automated high-speed manoeuvring and real-time target tracking, allowing it to intercept fast-moving threats autonomously, maximising response speed and effectiveness.
The MCL enhances the system’s operational flexibility, enabling deployment of multiple VIPER family systems from a range of tactical platforms, even while on the move. The launcher’s design allows for customisable configurations to address SWaP challenges and can hold one or several canisters. This integration is intended to provide tactical units with enhanced intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance capabilities, to boost overall survivability and lethality.
Yiftach Kleinman, Executive Vice President of Commercial at SpearUAV, highlighted the company’s commitment to leveraging Israeli innovation to improve warfighter effectiveness:
“Our focus is on leveraging Israeli hi-tech innovation to enhance warfighter capabilities and survivability. VIPER I exemplifies our commitment to delivering effective encapsulated solutions that meet the evolving challenges faced by manoeuvring forces.”
The VIPER I is one of many counter-UAS technology developments coming out of Israel and the Middle East recently, as the regional threat posed by drone and top-attack munitions continues to evolve.
