Orange Business has launched a new counter-drone offering, positioning it as Europe’s first counter-UAS solution delivered through an “as-a-service” model.
The system, called Orange Drone Guardian, is designed to detect, identify and classify drones operating in low-altitude airspace. Initially deployed across France, the company said the service could be expanded to other European markets.
The launch comes less than a year after the creation of Orange Business’ Defense and Security division and seeks to apply telecommunications infrastructure and cloud capabilities to security applications.
Subscription model targets infrastructure protection
Orange Drone Guardian is aimed at organizations responsible for critical infrastructure, including operators of vital importance, essential service providers, public institutions and major event organizers.
Unlike traditional counter-drone systems that require upfront investment in hardware and infrastructure, the platform is offered on a subscription basis. Customers receive drone detection data in real time without deploying their own sensor networks.
The system relies on Orange’s existing infrastructure, including connectivity networks, cloud services and operational centers. A network of nearly 20,000 tower and rooftop sites operated by TOTEM is used to host detection sensors, extending geographic coverage without requiring site-specific installations.
Focus on detection and integration
The solution combines sensor technologies with command-and-control software to detect and classify drones, including in complex urban environments where interference can affect performance.
Orange Business said the platform is designed with an open architecture, allowing integration of additional sensors and capabilities over time. Planned enhancements include the use of artificial intelligence and future 5G-based radio sensing technologies.
“I am proud to announce the launch of Orange Drone Guardian, the first offer from the Defense & Security division. This solution is a first in France and Europe. It addresses our customers’ challenges in protecting sensitive sites with sovereign infrastructure, a scalable and open model, and all delivered ‘as a service’. The full strength of this solution lies in our ability to innovate and in our multidisciplinary expertise,” said Nassima Auvray, Director of Defense & Security.
Shift toward service-based counter-UAS
The introduction of a service-based model looks to meet the demand more flexible approaches to airspace security.
By leveraging existing telecom infrastructure and centralized data processing, Orange Business is positioning the system as a lower-barrier entry point for organizations that require drone detection capabilities but may not have the resources to deploy and maintain standalone systems.
The company said the platform is designed to evolve over time, incorporating additional technologies and adapting to changing threat environments.
