U.S. Army Air and Missile Defense Operations is a field manual published by Headquarters, Department of the Army.
Field Manual (FM) 3-01 is the Army’s dedicated air and missile defense (AMD) publication, outlining doctrinal principles and guidelines. This manual outlines how the Army’s air defense artillery (ADA), the specialized component for AMD, and its affiliated organizations prepare for and execute operations.
It details the roles of AMD in supporting joint unified action operations, and Army unified land operations, encompassing offensive and defensive tasks, stability operations, and defense support for civil authorities. The manual discusses the strategic, operational, and tactical levels of war, explaining AMD operations in the context of their contributions to Army operations as articulated in FM 3-0 (the Army’s operational concept for unified land operations) and the joint counterair mission outlined in JP 3-01. FM 3-01 offers doctrinal guidance tailored for commanders, staff, leaders, and trainers across all levels in both operational and institutional forces. Additionally, it forms the foundation for curriculum development at the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School.
