The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has provided notice to general aviation (GA) and uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) pilots of pending flight restrictions and special air traffic procedures ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, which has been designated as a National Security Special Event (NSSE). This year’s Super Bowl will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11, 2024.
The Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) with additional information is expected to be published later this month.
During the February 7-12, 2024, timeframe, GA pilots must be aware of and comply with special air traffic procedures for the game and specific arrival and departure route requirements. The unique air traffic procedures, which are meant to minimize delays and ensure safety, will be in effect for the following airports:
- Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
- North Las Vegas Airport (VGT)
- Henderson Executive Airport (HND)
- Boulder City Airport (BVU)
GA pilots unfamiliar with the local Las Vegas airports can familiarize themselves with the actual runway approaches, airport taxiways, diagrams and graphics, and other safety-sensitive matters ahead of time through the FAA’s From the Flight Deck Video Series.
An NSSE is a designated event that, due to its political, economic, social, or religious significance, may be the target of domestic/international criminal activity (terrorism) due to national importance and high visibility.
As an NSSE, Super Bowl LVIII will have GA and UAS flight restrictions before and during the game. Soon, the FAA will publish a 10-nautical mile inner core and 30-nautical mile outer ring Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) that will be active on game day, February 11, from 2:30 PM to 8:30 PM local time. The TFR will not affect regularly scheduled commercial flights in and out of LAS. With air traffic control coordination, emergency medical, public safety, and military aircraft will be permitted to enter the TFR.
Drone pilots should be aware that areas will be designated as a No Drone Zone during the multi-day Super Bowl activities in Las Vegas. The FAA will post full text and graphics of the Super Bowl LVIII TFRs in February.
