Urban Air Mobility (UAM) has promised to revolutionize urban transportation by enabling cities to utilize the third dimension for mobility. Both traditional aviation industry players and high-tech startups are investing heavily in this still unproven technology. While Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) have been operating in segregated airspace where separation from other air traffic is guaranteed, there is interest in deploying UAS in non-segregated airspaces. Recent technological and operational advancements have improved UAS safety and performance capabilities, but there is a need to establish a systematic agreement between UAS safety policies and commonly accepted UAS Safety Risk Management processes. Such an agreement would demonstrate that UAS operations can be adequately controlled to avoid jeopardizing current safety levels and mitigation effectiveness in all airspace classes. This study seeks to examine the current status of UAS operations and future operation concepts, with a specific focus on safety risk management. The manuscript summarizes existing regulatory aspects related to safety investigation and reporting of drone operations and outlines potential areas for future research.
