Ukraine has significantly expanded its drone capabilities since the beginning of the year, with over 20 new models of fiber-optically controlled UAS entering service and 11 domestic companies now engaged in their production, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In an evening address on April 7, Zelenskyy said the country is seeing accelerated progress in the development and certification of advanced drone systems. He emphasized the importance of fiber-optic-controlled UAS, which are more resilient to electronic warfare and jamming, an increasing concern on Ukraine’s frontlines.
“More than 20 new certified drone models with fiber-optic control systems have appeared just since the start of this year,” the president said. “Eleven of our enterprises have already mastered production. The task now is to reach the highest possible scale of production and delivery.”
Zelenskyy also cited advancements in Ukraine’s Deep Strike program, which focuses on the development of long-range strike drones. While he did not disclose specific figures, he said production is on track to meet the required volumes for Ukraine’s defense forces in 2025.
The president has instructed relevant authorities to sign contracts at full capacity to support the continued expansion of domestic drone manufacturing. He also thanked Ukrainian manufacturers, soldiers and engineers involved in advancing the country’s unmanned aerial capabilities.
The announcement reflects Ukraine’s broader effort to bolster its defense-industrial base amid the ongoing conflict. With frontlines increasingly contested by electronic warfare systems, both sides are expected to increase reliance on fiber-optic tethered drones for reconnaissance, surveillance and strikes.
