Ukraine has revealed a domestically produced drone interceptor capable of targeting and downing Iranian-designed Shahed drones used by Russia, marking another development in the country’s push to expand its defense-industrial capabilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented footage of the drone in action during a recent visit to Kyiv by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The system was showcased as part of a broader demonstration of defense innovations aimed at strengthening cooperation with Belgium’s defense sector.

According to Ukrainian developers, the drone has already been deployed in combat and has intercepted over 20 Shahed drones in the past two months. The aircraft reportedly has a maximum speed of 200 km/h and a ceiling of 5 km, and it is also capable of engaging smaller reconnaissance drones.

While detailed specifications remain undisclosed, developers claim the platform is currently the most successful Shahed interceptor in Ukrainian service. It forms part of a broader national effort to develop cost-effective counter-UAS systems that can reduce reliance on high-value air defense missiles when confronting low-speed, small aerial threats.

The presentation also served a diplomatic and industrial purpose, highlighting ongoing defense cooperation between Ukraine and Belgium. In November 2024, Kyiv and Thales Belgium signed a memorandum of understanding to co-produce 70mm guided missiles. The agreement will enable Ukraine to manufacture FZ275 laser-guided rockets, expanding its domestic missile production capabilities.

The new interceptor drone is one of several UAS systems reportedly adopted by the Ukrainian Defense Forces in recent months, as the country seeks to counter persistent threats from Russian loitering munitions and surveillance platforms through rapid innovation and international partnerships.
