Russian forces have continued the ongoing aerial assault on Ukraine, straining the nation’s counter-UAS defenses once again. From the evening of January 21 through the early hours of January 22, the Ukrainians defended against 99 attack UAS, including “Shahed” drones and various types of imitation drones designed to confuse and overwhelm air defenses.
The attack originated from multiple launch points, including Chauda in occupied Crimea, and regions within Russia such as Millerovo, Bryansk, Kursk, Orel, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk. Despite the scale of the offensive, Ukraine’s comprehensive counter-UAS defenses effectively neutralized most of the drones.
Ukraine’s Air Force and Defense Forces, employing a combination of anti-aircraft missile systems, electronic warfare units and mobile fire groups, confirmed the destruction of 65 Shahed drones and other UAS across ten regions. An additional 30 enemy simulator drones were disrupted or destroyed without inflicting damage.
While no casualties have been reported, the attack reportedly caused damage to institutions, industrial facilities, farm buildings and private residences in various regions. Emergency services are actively working to clear debris and assist affected civilians.
This latest attack demonstrates the Ukrainian’s effectiveness in counter-drone operations and mitigating the impact of Russian drone warfare. However, the Ukrainian government continues to emphasize the importance of international support in bolstering its defensive capabilities to outmatch the production capabilities of the Russians.
