What is BVLOS and why does it matter for the drone industry?

Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) refers to drone flights where the operator does not keep the aircraft in view at all times. In other words, a BVLOS drone can fly much farther away or higher than the pilot’s direct line of sight.

Under BVLOS, the pilot (or automated systems) relies on onboard cameras, sensors and telemetry links – rather than seeing the drone with their own eyes – to control the flight and monitor for other air traffic. In practical terms, BVLOS extends a drone’s reach far beyond typical visual-flight limits.
