A wild falcon in Ukraine was recently observed attacking a Russian drone during an enemy aerial reconnaissance or strike operation, according to RBC Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers at the frontline witnessed the incident and later evacuated the falcon, named “Shrike,” to Dnipro, where veterinarians and volunteers are providing medical care.
According to animal volunteer Veronika Konkova, the falcon’s intervention forced the drone off course despite suffering a broken right shoulder in the process.
Soldiers who saw the event promptly rescued the bird and transported it from the combat zone near Zaporizhzhia to Dnipro for treatment. The Ukrainian military has committed to covering the falcon’s medical expenses.
Drones have been a central feature of warfare in the region, prompting Ukrainian forces to rely on a mix of technological and tactical countermeasures.
Counter-UAS systems deployed by Ukrainian forces include electronic warfare tools, radar detection and kinetic interceptors to detect and neutralize hostile drones. The falcon’s unexpected intervention provides a rare example of wildlife directly engaging with unmanned aerial threats.
Veterinarians are currently assessing the falcon’s injuries, including a fractured shoulder, and are preparing for potential surgery to preserve its wing. Volunteers and frontline drone operators who witnessed the incident have named the bird “Shrike” and are hopeful for its recovery.
