Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a sharp increase in the domestic production of drones and long-range strike systems, following a strategic meeting with senior military leadership on May 27. The discussion focused on Ukraine’s response to Russian attacks, including preventive measures to counter emerging threats.
Present at the meeting were Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, Chief of the General Staff Andriy Hnatov and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. In his evening address, Zelensky said Ukraine must not only react to Russian strikes but act proactively, with a particular emphasis on scaling up the country’s drone and missile manufacturing capabilities.
“Hundreds of Ukrainian enterprises are already delivering results for the country’s defense, and we plan to do even more,” he said.
Zelensky stressed the need to prioritize UAS, interceptors, cruise missiles and ballistic systems, noting that these technologies are central to battlefield awareness, long-range strikes and the protection of Ukrainian forces. He also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to involve Ukrainian businesses in weapons development and secure new agreements with European partners to support defense manufacturing.
Though specific operational plans were not disclosed, the president made clear that Ukraine is preparing to respond to all threats from Russia, including those involving drones, with Russian drone strikes reaching record numbers in recent weeks.
