HSWERX, the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) innovation hub, has selected MatrixSpace Radar to enhance air detection capabilities for UAS operations. The radar technology is intended to support missions for DHS agencies, including Customs and Border Protection (CBP), by providing advanced detection and tracking capabilities in complex environments.

Enhancing BVLOS operations

The project aims to address regulatory and operational challenges associated with flying larger UAS in the National Airspace System (NAS). Specifically, it sought onboard sensors for small UAS (sUAS) that align with FAA guidelines for safe más allá de la línea de visión visual (BVLOS) operations. By equipping Group III and smaller UAS with MatrixSpace Radar, CBP intends to improve aerial monitoring of expansive and remote locations.

MatrixSpace Radar was chosen for its compact design and ability to provide real-time object detection, supporting detect and avoid operations. The system is expected to enhance situational awareness and allow for safer integration of UAS into the NAS.

Next steps for integration and testing

Following an initial demonstration, CBP plans to move forward with integrating the radar into sUAS platforms, followed by flight testing and data collection.

Christina Heard, Program Manager at HSWERX, emphasized the importance of the selection, noting that CBP operates in large and complex environments where reliable detection technology is critical for safe and effective UAS operations.

MatrixSpace Chief Revenue Officer Lori DeMatteis highlighted the rigorous selection process, adding that the company is eager to demonstrate the radar’s capabilities in support of CBP and other agencies.

Expanding detection capabilities

MatrixSpace specializes in AI-enhanced radar solutions designed for situational awareness in various security applications. The company’s technology integrates radar sensors with AI-driven edge processing to detect and classify objects in real time, providing agencies with advanced monitoring and response capabilities.

The integration of MatrixSpace Radar into DHS UAS operations is part of a wider effort to improve BVLOS capabilities in the U.S., which are essential for modernizing aerial surveillance and border security efforts.
