OpenWorks Engineering recently participated in the NATO Technical Interoperability Exercise 2024 (TIE24), showcasing its Vision Flex system in a series of performance challenges. The system reportedly achieved a first place ranking for performance in both tracking and identification capability.

The event, which brings together C-UAS specialists from NATO allies, is designed to foster the development and integration of counter-drone technologies.

The NATO TIE event, held annually, is a collaborative platform for NATO members and industry experts to test and evaluate new C-UAS technologies. Participants engage in a range of performance challenges designed to push the limits of tracking, detection, identification and neutralisation systems. The event plays a crucial role in advancing technological solutions that address the growing threat posed by UAS.

The Vision Flex system demonstrated its ability to autonomously identify targets using input from RF and radar sensors, without operator intervention.

The system was successfully integrated with a variety of radar platforms, accurately tracking both fixed-wing and quad drones at long distances.  Such testing is important to develop the industry’s understanding of how various C-UAS systems can be deployed alongside one another as part of a holistic, layered defence.

OpenWorks’ technical director, Alex Wilkinson, noted the importance of the TIE event for research and development, stating:

“OpenWorks was proud to support NATO allies in the TIE event. Each year this event provides us with excellent feedback and many research and development opportunities. We were excited to receive first place, reflecting our hard efforts over the past year to improve the capabilities of our autonomous optical capabilities’

The NATO TIE event offers an opportunity for industry leaders to collaborate and refine their technologies. It also allows NATO to assess the C-UAS systems that the industry has to offer and determine if and how they can assist with meeting UAS defence objectives for the Alliance.
