Skyway and MatrixSpace partner for UAS detection and traffic management

Skyway, a California-based company specializing in vertiport development and operations, has announced a strategic partnership with MatrixSpace, a firm focused on AI-enabled sensing technology. The collaboration aims to improve air traffic management and unmanned aircraft detection systems.

Skyway provides airspace and airfield management services for airline operators, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) manufacturers and commercial developers. Through this partnership, Skyway will integrate MatrixSpace Radar’s AI-enabled sensing capabilities into its operations, with the goal of enhancing situational awareness at vertiports.

MatrixSpace’s radar technology is designed to detect and classify airborne and ground-based objects in real time, allowing Skyway’s command center to respond more efficiently to airspace activity.

“Our partnership with MatrixSpace is a game-changer for vertiport operations, bringing an advanced level of detection no one else could provide,” said Clifford Cruz, CEO at Skyway. “Integrating their intelligent radar technology with our vertiport infrastructure will ensure safer, more reliable and scalable operations for AAM, addressing critical needs in the aerospace and urban air mobility industries.”

As the number of unmanned craft in the skies continues to increase, particularly with companies like Amazon utilising drones for deliveries, the role of air traffic management will be increasingly important to ensure public safety.

MatrixSpace’s radar solutions offer features such as object detection, telemetry capture and mesh network synchronization, all of which support Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. These capabilities are essential for enabling efficient eVTOL flights and drone deployments for commercial, public safety and defense applications.

“This partnership is pivotal for accelerating innovations in aerospace navigation and ensuring seamless integration across the AAM ecosystem. MatrixSpace’s collaboration with Skyway will bring next-generation sensing technology to vertiport operations,” said Lori DeMatteis, Chief Revenue Officer at MatrixSpace. “Our solutions are designed to provide unparalleled situational awareness, ease and flexibility, and together, we’re creating a foundation for the safe and scalable future of air mobility.”

The partnership will also focus on addressing key challenges related to vertiport and corridor operations. Enhanced radar capabilities will help detect drones and mitigate unmanned aircraft threats. Real-time air traffic monitoring will reduce the risk of collisions and ensure regulatory compliance. Additionally, improved coordination between vertiports and airborne assets is expected to optimize flight paths and schedules.
