German Ministry of Defense to procure 500 SMARTSHOOTER systems

Israeli defense company SMARTSHOOTER, in partnership with IEA MIL-OPTICS GmbH, has secured a major contract with the German Ministry of Defense for the SMASH X4 fire control system. The framework agreement covers the production and delivery of up to 500 SMASH target assistance systems between 2024 and 2027, reinforcing Germany’s capabilities against Class 1 UAS threats.

The contract includes a firm order for 70 systems designated for the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) and 150 systems allocated to the Task Force Drone (TFD). This follows the German Army’s 2023 procurement of several dozen SMASH X4 units for infantry anti-drone capability, mounted on G27P assault rifles.

With the growing threat of small UAS, including foreign reconnaissance activities, demand for SMASH X4 is expected to rise. The system integrates a 4x magnifying optic scope with SMARTSHOOTER’s fire control technology, enhancing detection, recognition and identification ranges and improving lethality at greater distances.

The operational concept involves integration with Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH’s Skyranger system. Skyranger detects and tracks UAS threats using radar and electro-optical sensors, transmitting data through the Bundeswehr’s D-LBO program to the “Infantryman of the Future Advanced System” carried by soldiers. SMASH-equipped troops then receive real-time target acquisition and engagement guidance, improving reaction speed and accuracy.

Sebastian Mücke, MIL/LE Sales Manager at IEA MIL-OPTICS GmbH, emphasized that the contract strengthens the company’s role in equipping NATO forces with precision targeting technology. With this latest deal, SMARTSHOOTER continues to expand its footprint in European defense, providing advanced fire control solutions to allied forces.
