RID is the ability of a drone in flight to provide identification and location information that other parties can receive through a broadcast signal.
Implementing RID establishes the essential groundwork for enhancing safety and security in advanced drone operations. Furthermore, Remote ID serves as a valuable tool for airspace regulatory agencies, law enforcement, and other federal agencies by enabling them to pinpoint the control station in instances where a drone is operating unsafely or in restricted airspace.
This paper focuses on the RID rule in the United States. Similar RID rules have been or will be implemented in other countries. For example, the RID rule in Europe became effective on January 1, 2024. The concepts discussed here for security and law enforcement professionals remain the same, regardless of the country where the RID rule is implemented.
