Thai-Cambodian border tensions drive shift toward counter-UAS

Border tensions with Cambodia are prompting Thailand’s armed forces to reassess their procurement priorities for fiscal year 2027, with an increased focus on drones, counter-drone systems and domestic defense production.

Thai military officials say recent clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, including repeated encounters with Cambodian drone activity, have exposed gaps in existing capabilities and highlighted the need to adapt to evolving threats. While both countries are moving toward a second ceasefire framework, the Thai military assesses that long-term stability cannot be guaranteed and that both sides are likely to refine tactics and strengthen their arsenals.

According to Thai assessments, Cambodian forces have used drone swarms against Thai troops, including kamikaze-style drones. Drones have also reportedly penetrated deeper into Thai territory in what officials describe as harassment or intimidation, with flights observed near airports, weapons depots and critical infrastructure such as offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Thailand. The Second Army Area has described the situation as politically calm but militarily tense, noting continued intermittent drone reconnaissance of Thai positions.

Against this backdrop, the Thai military believes the coming five years will mark a period of intensified drone warfare. Officials say lessons from the border situation highlight the importance of self-reliance in national defense, particularly in unmanned and counter-unmanned systems.

All four branches of the armed forces, along with the Royal Thai Police, are developing plans for UAS and counter-UAS capabilities. These efforts are being integrated into a broader framework, alongside the drafting of doctrine to guide future capability development.

The Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters said it is conducting research and development in cooperation with domestic companies and universities, focusing on both offensive strike drones and counter-drone technologies.

The initiative also aims to establish domestic production lines and strengthen Thailand’s defense industrial base. In parallel, the military is exploring improvements to force protection, including the use of ultra-high-performance concrete bunkers reinforced with high-tensile steel fibers to enhance survivability on the front lines.
