Kyiv endures a sustained effort to overwhelm C-UAS defences

A sustained Russian drone assault on Kyiv overnight stretched for eight hours, causing injuries and damage to buildings across the Ukrainian capital, officials confirmed Today. The attack, which marked yet another another aerial assault in Russia’s nearly 1,000-day war on Ukraine, aimed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences by sending drones from multiple directions and altitudes.

Ukraine’s air defence systems intercepted around three dozen drones, local authorities reported, but debris from the downed aircraft damaged a hospital, as well as residential and office buildings, and ignited a fire on the 33rd floor of a high-rise apartment building. Two people were reported injured.

Kyiv has endured almost daily drone attacks that bring nightly explosions and the persistent threat of drones above the city. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted earlier in the week that Russia is now deploying approximately ten times as many Iranian-made Shahed drones as it did a year ago.

Russia’s recent attacks focus largely on Shahed drones, which Ukrainian officials believe are intended to terrorise civilians and stretch air defences.

“Russia is aiming to save and stockpile its missiles, which are much more powerful than drones,” said Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Centre for Countering Disinformation.

Kovalenko suggested that Russia’s shift to drones could be a strategy to conserve its missile reserves, which have been used extensively to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

In the southern city of Odesa, one person was injured when drone debris struck an 11-storey residential building, according to regional governor Oleh Kiper.

Ukrainian forces face challenges in matching Russia’s larger and more heavily equipped military, making ongoing Western aid crucial to Ukraine’s defence efforts. The election of Donald Trump, who has expressed opposition to U.S. aid to Ukraine, adds uncertainty to the future of that support.

Russia’s continued drone assaults appear aimed at wearing down Ukraine’s defences and testing Western resolve to support Kyiv. By drawing out the conflict, Russia seems intent on exhausting Ukraine’s resources and public morale.
