L3Harris wins additional US contract for VAMPIRE systems

L3Harris Technologies has secured a new contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to supply additional VAMPIRE systems, expanding on initial deliveries made in 2023 to support European operations.

The system, short for Vehicle Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment, is designed to counter small UAS threats using a modular, portable platform that can be rapidly deployed across a variety of ground vehicles.

The VAMPIRE integrates L3Harris’ WESCAM MX-10D sensor with a precision weapons station, combining electro-optical targeting with laser-guided rocket systems.

The payload includes the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) and proprietary L3Harris components like a proximity fuze and the Widow mission management software, allowing operators to track, target and neutralize drones and low-flying aircraft with high accuracy.

While the company has emphasized VAMPIRE’s role in defending European infrastructure, the system’s flexible design has made it relevant in other theaters.

Recent reports have suggested that the Pentagon has announced plans to reallocate proximity fuzes originally intended for Ukraine, redirecting them to U.S. Air Force units in the Middle East. These fuses are used in the APKWS-guided rockets that form part of the L3Harris VAMPIRE system.

L3Harris has hinted at broader potential for the platform, including possible maritime applications against fast inshore attack craft and low-slow flyers, expanding its utility beyond traditional land warfare.

According to Tom Kirkland, Vice President and General Manager for Targeting and Sensor Systems at L3Harris:

“VAMPIRE has proven to be a reliable and cost-effective response to the growing counter-UAS threat on the global battlefield.”

The company says it will continue working with the Pentagon and allied forces to expand fielding of the system in multiple domains.
